Dev Diary Video #1–Creating the “Get Local Admins GUI” application

July 21, 2012 — 3 Comments

This is a video showing how I created a program that someone recently requested, hopefully if people find these development diary style videos interesting then I will do more as I make more programs (so please let me know what you think!).

This is a very simple application so I thought it would be a good one to use for my first development diary video. It is a little app that lets you select an OU from AD to import a list of computer names from, and will then show you a list of who has local Administrator permissions on each computer (and it expands any groups in the local admins group so that you see every single user that would have admin access). Someone emailed me a few days ago asking if I knew of any programs that would do this, and I didn’t so I figured I’d write one.

Here’s part 1:

and here’s part 2:

I recommend viewing in full screen mode and in HD, otherwise the programming code may be quite hard to read. Oh and sorry my voice sounds so bad, I would have waited until I didn’t have hay fever as bad but that would mean waiting for months!

The application will be available to download on my website (for free) within the next couple of days. EDIT: The first version is now available to download here:

Oh and I’ve just recorded another video which is a fairly in depth look at how Group Policy works and some tips and tricks on the subject of GPO troubleshooting and analysis (EDIT: video now available here). I’ll make another post on my blog once that has finished uploading. Please let me know what you think of these videos and if you have any suggestions for future videos just send me an email or leave a comment here.

    thanks for this master piece.

any time i start scanning my domain, it shows “Querying 1000 Computers”, i have more then 1,000 pc in my domain.

    how to increase this limit

      Hi Ali,

Thanks for pointing that out, that was because I foolishly forgot to set the page size for the LDAP search. I’ve corrected this now, so if you download the new version (same link as before, or just go to Help -> Check For Updates from within the program) then it should work fine

Let me know how it goes

thanks a lot sir, hats off, GOD bless you
